So you thought Udaipur was only about its gardens and havelis? Think again – as you enjoy some quaint experiences in the City of Lakes.

As tourist destinations in India go, none are as old-world as Udaipur, by far. As the rush of modern life transformed other Indian cities into modern versions of themselves over a period of years, Udaipur has largely retained its historic, royal splendour. It still has its palaces, shaded streets and picturesque gardens. But it also offers a charming experience that most other cities cannot.

If you are visiting Udaipur any time soon, here are 5 off-beat things to do there:

1 Stay in a palace. When in Udaipur, do as the royals do: stay at a true blue palace. You won’t have queens and kings in court, but you will have the closest experience to actual royal living if you book your stay at The Leela Palace Udaipur[1]. This is one of the top Udaipur hotels that indulge your love for all things opulent – it used to be an actual palace, and it retains its royal splendour to this day.

2 Explore Lake Pichola on a boat. When you stay in an authentic Udaipur hotel cum palace like The Leela Palace Udaipur, you get access to the stunning Lake Pichola[2]. The hotel nestles at the banks of the scenic lake, and you can hire a boat to ride across it. Apart from the tranquil boat ride in the evening, you can take periodic stops to see its four islands: Jag Niwas, Mohan Mandir, Jag Mandir and Arsi Vilas.

3 Go Insta-happy at Saheliyon Ki Bari. What’s an Udaipur vacation without lots of pictures, right? The city offers terrific photo ops at every corner. But your Instagram feed is going to be littered with pictures of the famous Saheliyon Ki Bari[3], which is a famous garden originally created for ladies of the royal court. It has fountains, manicured lawns, animal shapes carved out of the hedges and large marble elephants. Whip out your phone and start clicking, because photography is allowed here.

4 Seek blessings at the mystical Karni Mata Temple. How’s this for some magic of yore? The famous Shri ManshapurnaKarni Mata Temple located on Machla Hills is said to make your wishes come true. The story goes that Karni Mata, a mystic and sage of the 13th Century, made her dead son come alive at the spot where the temple sanctum stands. But the boy came reincarnated as a white rat, and later generations of the sage were also born as white rats[4]. The temple is abuzz with these creatures even today, and making them an offering is said to bring good luck. Visitors from all over Rajasthan show up to the temple to see the goddess’ blessings for luck and fortune.

5 Take the aerial route over the lakes. Speaking of the Karni Mata Temple, you must reach it using the famous Udaipur ropeway.[5]It is a thrilling ride that gives you a panoramic view of the city, and more to the point, glides you over the region’s most beautiful lakes. It is a slow ride over Udaipur, so sit back and enjoy the beauty of the city as you move over it.
